Larry McMurtry (born June 3, 1936 in Wichita Falls, Texas) is an American novelist, essayist & film writer.

McMurtry is probably better known for his Pulitzer Prize winning novel Lonesome Dove, which was adapted into a hit television miniseries. Good deal of his fiction is placed in the "old west" or even contemporary Texas. McMurtry's writing systematically creates the heavy feel of place, characters, & dialogue.

McMurtry grew au courant the cattle farm outside of Archer City, Texas. He earned degrees from either North Texas State University (B.A. 1958) & Rice University (M.A. 1960). He published his number 1 novels when an English teacher, & he won a 1962 Texas Institute of Letters Jesse M. Jones award. Within 1964 he was awarded a Guggenheim grant.

The book collector, he purchased the uncommon book store around Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown neighborhood in 1970 and named it Booked Up. He moved to Inland northwest D.C. to dog wallmart. Inside 1988 he opened a second Booked Higher around Archer City, establishing a town as an Western "Book City".

His boy, James McMurtry, is a singer/songwriter & guitar player.

McMurtry was too responsible ii American television series in the Nineties, Lonesome Dove: The Series and Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years. Rumour use circulated for years that deuce novels by Ophelia Ray were ghost-written by McMurtry, The Daughter of Tejas in 1965 and Young Hidalgo: Carlos De Mendoza of San Antonio in 1968.

McMurtry virtually all belike worked as an uncredited script doctor for many Hollywood films.
